| . | . | . | Unreal 3 - making pretty things look awful | . | . |
|
This may just be nostalgia taking hold of me, but URGH. I'm all for new graphics technologies and I would love for old classics to be lovingly remade with new technology. Unfortunately, they aren't. Here are some pictures to demonstrate my point.
Ta-da! Before and after. It's obvious which one sports the latest generation technology and which was still teetering between 16 and 32 bit colour in the options menu... but which would you rather play on? This is a good example of a remake gone wrong, in my opinion. I'm sure it's lovingly furnished with detail and is faithful to the original gameplay wise. Hey, the graphics is also about 1000 times better... and yet, to me it just looks so uninviting. The first was so atmospheric- an asteroid with two imposing structures floating around the Earth. The bottom one just looks depressing. It's like something out of the Matrix. What's with those worms crawling into the sky? (Yes it's probably a tornado or something)... where would I rather be on holiday? (Hint: top one, as long as I could breathe in space. It looks so sunny and welcoming). Let me attack the UT3 engine a bit more. The HDR is horrible. It's as if it was still wet when some fat person decided to smear their sweaty, unclean buttocks all over it. Let me get another picture up.
Eww. Same map, different angle. Look at the amount of blur. Look at the appalling amount of HDR blur and stuff. It looks unclean, like some horrific remix of 2 girls 1 cup in computer game form. Somebody's taken a golden shower all over the blue's base. I'd rather have a Redeemer take a journey up another bodily orifice than inhabit such an effect-laden map. Does more equal better? (Does that sentence contradict itself?) If so, try getting a list of your top 100 songs... then play them all together and see if they sound any better. I doubt they do. Rant over. I was looking forward to the Unreal 3 engine. All of those real time shadows, detailed meat physics things... and all I got was a pretty looking thing smothered in so much make up it ended up looking like pop 'n' fresh. So much processing power wasted. Time to rectify this, here's a picture of good graphics done RIGHT.
